A shock absorber, also called damper, is a mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic device, or a combination of them, whose function is absorb and damp shocks and vibrations. It works transforming the shock energy (kinetic) into another form of energy, usually heat.
Hydraulic shock absorbers are the most employed, especially on automotive industry. Exist two principal types of vehicle shock absorbers. Dual tube and monotube.
- Dual tube. This kind of shock absorber has two different cylinders, the working tube and the reserve tube. This cylinders are connected by a compression valve. Hydraulic fluid moves between different parts of the working tube via small holes in the piston and between both cylinders via the valve, converting the "shock" energy into heat which must then be dissipated. There are some alternative designs for dual tubes shock absorbers, such as twin-tube gas charged, position sensitive damping, acceleration sensitive damping and coilover.
- Monotube. Consist in a simple cylinder, divided in two chambers. One chamber contains high pressure nitrogen, the other one contains oil. It has also two pistons. These pistons are called the working piston and the dividing piston (free piston). They move in relative synchrony inside the pressure tube in response to pressure changes.
