How many types of valves are there?

Valves are mechanical devices that control the flow and pressure of a system or process (e.g. a hydraulic system or process). They are essential components in industry and there are many types available for a wide range of applications.

Currently, there is a wide variety and each class has a number of models with different features and capabilities. A multitude of classifications could be made, but the two most common are those that cater to function and mechanical movement. In addition, it should be noted that most valves can be categorized into one or more classifications.

Gestión de Compras has developed a great experience in manufacturing steel, stainless steel, copper and brass valves, cast iron… For example, butterfly valves, WAFER type, safety valves, control valves, check valves, globe valves, ball valves, diaphragm valves, needle valves, gate valves, pressure relief valves, pressure compensating valves, control valves, multifunction valves, check valves, non-return valves, etc…

Classification according to function

  • Shut-off valves. They are used to stop the flow or isolate a part of the system until the desired flow rate is reached.
  • Regulating valve. Used in piping systems to regulate the flow of fluid. The regulation is carried out by increasing or decreasing the flow in response to a pressure, flow or temperature control mechanism.
  • In general check or control valves are used for the prevention of back flow in piping systems. They are mostly self-acting, so the plug is held open by forward flow and closes quickly with reverse flow.
  • Pressure relief. They are used to protect pipes and equipment that are subjected to pressures that exceed the pressure they can withstand by design. Safety valves are part of this group.

Classification according to capacity

  • Linear motion. It uses a closing element (obturator) that moves in a straight line to start, stop or obturate the flow.
  • Circular or rotary motion. The valve disc or plug rotates around an axis at right angles to the direction of flow.
  • Quarter-turn or rotary valves. The obturator and shaft rotate from 0º to 90º from the fully open to the closed position. They are quick opening and can be operated manually or by an actuator.
