Prototypes

Gestión de Compras has the necessary means to produce prototypes through more than 40 state-of-the-art processes according to the customer’s drawings.

Prototypes

In product development, the prototyping phase is essential to validate designs, evaluate functionalities and optimize processes before mass production. The choice of the right manufacturing method for a prototype depends on multiple factors, such as geometric complexity, material requirements, dimensional accuracy and lead times. In Gestión de Compras, we have extensive experience in the manufacture of prototypes using various advanced technologies, ensuring solutions tailored to the needs of each industrial sector.

Manufacturing Processes for Prototypes

For the manufacture of prototypes, we use advanced technologies that allow us to achieve different degrees of precision, mechanical strength and surface quality. We work mainly with four techniques for prototyping: 3D printing, CNC machining, vacuum casting and rapid manufacturing by sheet metal forming.

3D printing has revolutionized the sector thanks to its ability to manufacture complex geometries in reduced times. There are several technologies within this field, such as:

  • SLA (stereolithography), which provides extremely high resolution and surface detail, ideal for aesthetic or design validation prototypes.
  • SLS (selective laser sintering), which is capable of producing functional parts with materials such as high-strength nylon.
  • FDM (fused deposition modeling), a cheaper and faster option used for concept parts
  • MJF (Multi Jet Fusion), which combines speed and excellent finish
  • SLM (selective laser melting), which makes it possible to produce metal prototypes with mechanical properties almost equivalent to the final parts.

CNC machining, on the other hand, is a highly precise and versatile alternative that allows prototypes to be manufactured in metal and plastic materials with extremely tight tolerances. Unlike 3D printing, CNC machining starts from a solid block, which provides higher density and optimal mechanical properties, making it ideal for prototypes undergoing demanding functional tests.

Another technique used is vacuum casting, which allows the production of small series of prototypes in polyurethane resin with characteristics similar to injected plastics. This technology is particularly useful for validating designs prior to the manufacture of definitive molds, since it makes it possible to obtain parts with excellent surface finishes and good mechanical properties in reduced times and at optimized costs.

Finally, rapid manufacturing by sheet metal forming makes it possible to produce prototypes of metal components through processes such as laser cutting, bending and stamping. This method is essential in sectors such as automotive and electronics, where the validation of metal housings and structures is key before moving to mass production.

Materials in Prototyping

The materials used in prototyping must meet the mechanical strength, thermal stability and dimensional accuracy requirements necessary for design validation. In polymers, the most commonly used include ABS, PLA and nylon for 3D printing, while polycarbonate and PEEK are selected when higher thermal and chemical resistance is required. In SLA resins, rigid, flexible or transparent formulations can be used depending on the application. In vacuum casting, resins that simulate polypropylene, ABS or elastomers such as TPU are used, allowing the behavior of the final part to be evaluated before mass production.
As for metals, machined aluminum is one of the most demanded options due to its ease of machining, lightness and resistance to corrosion, while stainless steel and titanium are used in sectors such as aerospace or medical, where materials with high strength and biocompatibility are required. For metal 3D printing (SLM), aluminum alloys, stainless steel, Inconel and titanium are used, achieving parts with properties comparable to those obtained by machining or casting.

Industrial Sectors and Applications

Prototyping is a critical phase in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, medical and consumer goods. In the automotive sector, prototypes enable the validation of structural components, interiors and cooling systems prior to mass production. In the aerospace industry, prototyping with advanced materials ensures the optimization of aerodynamic designs and the validation of parts subjected to extreme conditions. In the medical sector, prototyping is key in the creation of customized implants, surgical devices and precision medical tools.

Key Factors in Prototype Manufacturing

When selecting the manufacturing process, it is critical to consider factors such as cost, dimensional accuracy, surface quality and lead time. Rapid design iteration is an essential aspect of product development, so the ability to modify and produce successive versions of a prototype quickly is a major value-add. Dimensional accuracy is critical in applications where tolerances must be tight, such as assemblable mechanical components. Surface quality influences the aesthetics and functionality of the part, so techniques such as post-processing in 3D printing or polishing in CNC machining can be decisive.
